The story

The official description frames The Martian as a survival story: during a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But he has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With limited resources he must rely on ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and attempt to signal to Earth that he is alive, setting up a premise of isolation and resourcefulness.

What to expect

Expect a narrative built on survival tactics and problem-solving under extreme conditions, centered on Watney’s attempts to stay alive and contact Earth. The description also signals parallel action: scientific teams and crewmates plotting a rescue, and a public rooting for his return, implying both technical ingenuity and human drama.

Why it works

The trailer establishes isolation quickly, then refuses to stay mournful. Mark Watney's direct-to-camera resolve gives the campaign a practical, problem-solving spine, while mission-control reactions and expanding space imagery widen the scale. The result promises tension without hiding the film's wit or competence-driven appeal.

Signature moment

After the danger settles in, Watney faces the camera and commits to solving the impossible problem, launching the montage forward.

Historical context

The official studio page describes the 2015 story as Watney surviving alone on Mars while trying to contact Earth so a rescue can be devised. The campaign built around that survival-and-rescue framework.

Verdict

A clear, propulsive trailer that makes ingenuity feel as cinematic as danger.
