The Fault in Our Stars: story and trailer overview
The story
The Fault in Our Stars introduces Hazel and Gus, two teenagers who meet and fall in love at a cancer support group. Shailene Woodley plays Hazel and Ansel Elgort plays Gus. Adapted from John Green’s novel, the story places their shared wit and resistance to convention alongside the experience of being young, alive and in love under difficult circumstances.
What to expect
The official description points to a teenage love story that combines humor and tragedy. This may appeal to viewers who want a relationship-centered adaptation of John Green’s novel. These expectations come from the synopsis; they do not assess the actors’ performances, the trailer’s editing or its use of music.
Trailer analysis
Why it works
The trailer avoids playing every beat at maximum sadness. Hazel and Gus are introduced through dry humor and easy chemistry before the edit gradually admits the weight surrounding them. That tonal balance makes the romantic montage feel earned and gives the final emotional turn more force.
Signature moment
A playful exchange gives way to a quieter close-up, letting the mood pivot from witty courtship to real vulnerability.
Historical context
The official 2014 campaign presented Hazel and Gus as a coming-of-age romance shaped by illness, travel, and the limits of their time together. The studio also released several music and fan-event pieces around the film.
Verdict
Tender without becoming one-note, and restrained enough to let the characters lead.
