Back in the day film advertisements were shown in theaters AFTER a movie finished. Thus they “trailed” the main movie.
Now it is the other way around, but the term remains.

because back in the day, they FOLLOWED the main feature, instead of being shown before the main feature. (they ‘trailed’ the main feature, hence the term, ‘trailer’)
The studios figured out that most people don’t stay in the movie theater for the credits, so they moved the trailers to start BEFORE the main feature. But the old term, ‘trailer’ stuck.
